HUD-Sporting "Google Glasses" May Hit Streets This Year
Is reaching into your pocket to snag your smartphone just too much work? Did you ever want to see the world through the eyes of a video game character? Am I asking too many questions? If you answered "Yes" to any of those, you'll be jazzed by the following sentence. Apparently, the long-rumored "Google Glasses" -- Google-built shades with a HUD and all kinds of cool connectivity features -- could be on track to launch later this year, and for less cash than you might have expected. Game on!
According to the New York Times' Nick Bilton and 9 to 5 Google's Seth Weintraub, the shades reportedly run on some flavor of the Android operating system and should include 3G or 4G integration as well as motion control and GPS sensors, amongst others. The HUD will only be on one lens, and Google Glasses will allegedly sport a low-res front-facing camera, last-gen smartphone-esque hardware specs, and full voice input and output.
Google Glasses should cost somewhere between $250 and $600 and be available for you and me to buy sometime before 2013 rolls around -- if the rumors prove to be correct. Initial productions runs are said to be small so that Google can get a grasp on whether or not there's a market for the technology.
Is there a market for the technology? It's all talk for now, but would you drop a few hundred bucks for a pair of Google Glasses?

I've offered up my body to xda developers for an experiment codenamed :CUPCAKE SPRINKLES. My brain will serve as the first android augmented and interactive virtual and real reality. Of course, Motorola found out post-offering so the only way it's active right now is with an Atrix 2 plugged up my ass which is uncomfortable and , quite honestly, just not practical. But, with the atrix 2 in my ass, the google goggle function is pretty spot on except for seeing prices over a few womens heads on Bourbon St. during Mardi Gras. It turned out they were hookers and google had linked me into the N.O.P.D. database. I was wasted at the time. I had thought I was hallucinating. Google nostrils has proved to be an epic failure. I don't want to know the prices of the contents of that chick's fart and this guy's vomit.

It depends on the appearance. If it looks like the Virtualboy (Best gaming device ever, but not portable :( ), then no way. If, however, they're nearly indistinguishable from regular shades, I'll be all over it for the 300-400 price range. $6 is a bit much for something less than a tablet and ugly as sin. I'd be more interested in a glasses device that interfaces with the phone device in my pocket, which is more seamlessly integrated with the tablet device in my bag, but of course no one has managed to conceive of this level of integration yet.

Companies are good for buying out or taking someone's ideas. Apple, Microsoft and et cetera own patents to ideas they did NOT invent. Fanboys need to stop thinking their favorite company came up whatever first when they actually do not know who did themselves. F.T.W., software patents are a complete waste and should be fully abolished.

Basically the updated "walkman" (or perhaps watchman ;-) , wonder if they will go with umbilical power and processing to keep the headset comfortable. Likely first will be an accessory for Moto's watch sized unit or something similar that would strap into a bicep band and share heart rate, lap time and navigation data for lots of athletes and explorers out there. Wait till it's bundled to face recognition allowing a far savvier pre-crime cell web than the Dark night had. Honestly though will just be for fringe adopters until immersive, 3-D stereoscopic displays making for discreet and enhanced viewing of the nets best.

I'd surely shell out hundreds just to have Google plant a tracking device up my ass for the sake of advertising dollars.
How about "Fuck Google?" How's that for advanced technology?

Just imagine looking down a busy street and little info balloons pop up wherever you see a restaurant, or a sporting goods store or what ever your continued patronage to Google has told them you're interested in.

And in each of those ballons is a streaming COMMERCIAL. Now you are seeing the real intent behind the product.

I'm wanting something with a see-through lense that preserves your binocular, depth of field. I heard that the one lense is opaque, not see-thru. So the data won't 'float' in your field of vision.
My ultimate use would be as a 'heads-up' display for sport-riding.
Imagine...speed/gearing/RPM all instantly accessed. With the right algorythms/camera/hardware, it could predict/project potential obstacles, best line, braking points, way-points....

It's way too early to get excited. Besides, do you really want Google to be riding around on your glasses, recording every aspect of your every moment?

Well, I suppose that would be better than drugs (prescription or otherwise) being #1.

Why? The HUD would be focused on the glass of the lens, not into your eye. Also it would be a visable frequencies which are normal for your eye.
Still, something to be wary of I guess.

If they can be made in my prescription, I will be at the front of the line. That is assuming there is no catch, no need to put Google Chrome on my computer for example.
As for Apple being first. They were not first with MP3 players, they just had the neatest design when they came out. The same with the tablet. They caught everyone by suprise with excellent design (not necessarily performance) that is probibally not going to happen again.

Yes, the true beginning of augmented reality is (almost) upon us! I hate to say it, but I seriously thought that Apple would be the first up to bat with something like this, after beating everyone to market with the iPod, iPhone and iPad. The iEye was just around the corner, I figured. Glad to see Google on it.

Apple was not 1st to market with the Ipod, Saehan Information Systems created the 1st MP3 player in 1997, and Diamond created the first mass produced MP3 player in 1998, but was sued so badly, they discontinued it. Creative created the Nomad in 2000, and is widely considered the predecessor to the ipod. The ipod was realased in 2001.
Nor were they 1st with a phone that can play MP3 files, i had one one before the iphone came out..

Apple may not be the first to market with it, but I'm sure they will try and sue the hell out of Google saying they own some piece of intellectual property involved in it.
But hey, there's nothing like holding back progress like the court system eh.

My dad had a Nomad when they first came out. The Nomad was pretty bulky though, so i'm guessing that's why it never took off.
And not only was Apple not the first to have a mp3 player/phone, they weren't the first to integrate a touchscreen into a phone. Palm had that down pat before apple put it all into a shiny box.

They have LCD glasses that are made to switch their Diopter rating so that you can read up close. I can only assume they will do the same for distance viewing in the future.

You want the future of gaming? Combine these with a next gen smartphone to provide muscle and connectivity, mix in AR technology, and a paintball esthetic...
Instant massively multiplayer gaming set in the real world, but with access to fictional weapons, tools, and data. I'm addicted to the concept already and it doesn't exist yet. lol
Forget VR gaming, AR gaming is the future.
